About Sandra Muzzy, Watercolor Artist & Teacher
I learned to paint as a child. I was confined to my bed for extended periods of time dealing with two bouts of Rheumatic Fever. My mother was at her wits end in her attempts to keep me mentally occupied while at the same time keeping me physically quiet. She bought me paints, pastels, and all sorts of art supplies. From that day on, I have never known a moment of boredom in my life.
I live and work in Bloomington, Minnesota. I have a home studio just outside my back door. I am a full time artist, making my living selling my artwork and teaching students how to paint. At the moment, I have approximately 40 private students. I also teach Watercolor at the Bloomington Art Center, the Minnetonka Art Center, and workshops throughout the Upper Midwest. I am actively involved in the Minneapolis art scene. I am a past President of the Minnesota Watercolor Society and have served both the Minnesota Watercolor Society and the Northstar Watercolor Society in a number of different capacities.
Over the years, I have gravitated to the Natural World. I have studied Horticulture and Landscape planning, worked in nurseries and florist shops and spent many hours digging in the garden. Nowadays, much of my time is spent trying to capture, up close and on paper, those things in the natural world that intrigue me the most. The repetition of simple organic patterns and shapes are reflected in my paintings from debris on the ground all the way up to the nests in the trees. What catches my fancy is sometimes a spring ephemeral, maybe a hardy weed in the cracks or even a feather dropped by a busy bird on its way to more important tasks. These simple objects are so easy to overlook in our daily bustle. I bring you up close to these treasures and ask you to take the time to enjoy them.
Watercolor is the perfect medium to capture the transient nature of my subjects. It can be spontaneous, high-energy and capricious. It is always delicate and responsive. It allows me to vent, to express, to emote... to start all over again.
